GERALD ALBRIGHT
The 29th annual Boscov’s Berks Jazz Fest marks the 17th time that amazing saxophonist Gerald Albright will be performing at the Fest.
Gerald talks to Diane Dayton of Cool Jazz Cafe and gives details about his performance in the “Remembering Grover at 75” show on Saturday, April 13, at DoubleTree by Hilton Reading with Everette Harp, Kirk Whalum and Andy Snitzer, plus Grover Washington’s Original Band and The Berks Horns.
Glynis, Gerald’s wife, brings her Glynis’ Kitchen to the DoubleTree for the second year, a tasty pop-up restaurant featuring her special chicken and waffles.
Gerald also discusses touring with his daughter Selina – and a new album and a Christmas CD is in the works.

 

KAREN BRIGGS
Violinist Karen Briggs talks to Diane Dayton about her performances at the Boscov’s Berks Jazz Fest. Karen performs with the amazing cast that Jason Miles has put together for his “Celebrating the Music of Weather Report,” show on Friday, April 12, at Miller Center for the Arts.
She is excited about the interpretation of that music with Randy Brecker, Bob Mintzer, Gerald Veasley, Mino Cinelu and Richie Morales.
Karen looks forward to the improvisation with playing at Gerald Veasley’s Midnight Jams on April 12 and 13 at the Inn at Reading. She also shares information about her new album to be released sometime in 2019 and how honored she is to be playing music for over four decades.
Karen sings praises for the Berks Jazz Fest from the management to the volunteers and how wonderful it is to be a part of fest.

 

STEVE SMITH
Hall of Fame drummer Steve Smith comes to the Boscov’s Berks Jazz Fest with his swinging band Vital Information NYC Edition.Steve, coming off a two-year tour with Journey, talks to Diane Dayton about the Vital Information performance on opening night Friday, April 5, at The Inn at Reading.
Steve talks about the energy with the band — Andy Fusco, Baron Browne, Mark Soskin and Vinny Valentino – and how the band came together, the concept behind what they do and how they perform.
Steve reflects about playing Journey shows and jazz shows, the difference in approach and feel.

 

CHRIS WALKER
Bassist and vocalist Chris Walker calls in from a studio in LA after a mastering session to talk to Diane Dayton of Cool Jazz Cafe.

Chris will be performing at two concerts during the Boscov’s Berks Jazz Fest. He is honored to be a part of the Chuck Loeb Memorial All-Star Jam on Thursday, April 11 at DoubleTree by Hilton Reading.
Also at the same location, Chris is debuting his show “We’re in This Love Together: A Tribute to Al Jarreau” on Friday, April 12.
Chris shares thoughts about how this show has come together and the artists that will be performing. He also reflects on his long relationship with Al Jarreau, the life lessons he has learned from him, and the positive impact Al had on the world.

 

BRIAN CULBERTSON
Multi-instrumentalist, producer and amazing performer Brian Culbertson talks with Diane Dayton of Cool Jazz Cafe about his opening-night show at the 29th Annual Boscov’s Berks Jazz Fest on Friday, April 5, at Santander Performing Arts Center.
Brian is excited about being back at Berks, he will be mixing up his show with favorites, new material and new band members.Brian also discusses news of his Blu-Ray release of the “Colors of Love” Tour and two-disc CD audio from the Las Vegas Live show in May 2018.
Brian gives updates with his Napa Valley Jazz Getaway and his new Chicago Jazz Getaway – and offers the inspiration behind his new album “Winter Stories,” to be released in September.


KIM WATERS

Saxophonist, composer and producer Kim Waters celebrates 30 years in the music business this year and takes time to talk with Diane Dayton of Cool Jazz Cafe about the Boscov’s Berks Jazz Fest.
Kim will be part of the Chuck Loeb Memorial All-Star Jam on Thursday, April 11, at DoubleTree by Hilton Reading/Grand Ballroom and also at the same location, Saturday, April 13, with Chris “Big Dog” Davis & Friends. He also will perform at Gerald Veasley’s Midnight Jams on April 12 and 13.
Kim shares thoughts on being in the music industry for three decades; producing other artists; and his daughter Kayla as a musician and her work ethic.
Kim talks about the dedication of his latest album “What I like,” and how much he likes being a part of Berks Jazz Fest.  Kim will tour this year celebrating his 30th anniversary, with his daughter Kayla joining him for several dates.

 

KAYLA WATERS
Pianist, singer, composer, producer and daughter of Kim Waters, Kayla Waters will be making her first appearance at the Boscov’s Berks Jazz Fest, sharing her thoughts with Diane Dayton.
Kayla’s show with her band is on Friday, April 12, at Club ECP at the DoubleTree.  She shares details about her show with original music from her two albums; her band members; and her positive inspiring approach. She also discusses growing up with her father’s musical influence; when she started playing piano; her experiences playing with big names; and what she has learned.
Kayla will be touring this year with her dad during his 30th anniversary tour.

 

KEIKO MATSUI
Amazing pianist, composer Keiko Matsui returns to the Boscov’s Berks Jazz Fest for a special concert with the Reading Pops Orchestra on Saturday, April 6, at 7:30 p.m. at the Miller Center for the Arts.  The concert celebrates the Pops 50th anniversary.
Keiko talks to Diane Dayton of Cool Jazz Cafe about her latest — and 28th CD release — “Echo” and how it came about; also her process of creating music, a tradition before her concerts and the relationship with her fan base that includes generations. Keiko also shares details about her upcoming world tour.

 

WILL RAPP
Reading Pops Orchestra conductor Will Rapp talks with Diane Dayton of Cool Jazz Cafe about the Pops 50th Anniversary season and the performance with Keiko Matsui on Saturday, April 6, at 7:30 p.m., at the Miller Center for the Arts during the Boscov’s Berks Jazz Fest.
Will reflects on the synergy performing with Keiko, a story telling process and deeper meaning with the musicians with the Pops, past collaborations with other artists at Berks Jazz Fest, and a look at what is coming up with the 50th Anniversary year with the Reading Pops.

 

GERALD VEASLEY
Gerald Veasley shares time with Diane Dayton of Cool Jazz Cafe about various performances at the Berks Jazz Fest — which he has been a part of for the past 28 years. Gerald hosts the Midnight Jams each Friday and Saturday night of the fest at The Inn at Reading, April 5-6 and April 12-13. Gerald brings the show “I Got Life: the Music of Nina Simone” with Carol Riddick on Saturday, April 6 at 1:30& 7:30 p.m. at Club ECP at the DoubleTree.
Gerald is co-musical director of the Chuck Loeb Memorial All-Star Jam on Thursday, April 11, at 7 p.m. at DoubleTree by Hilton Reading. Gerald’s other performances include “Celebrating the Music of Weather Report” with Jason Miles and others on Friday, April 12, at 7:30 p.m. at the Miller Center for the Arts and “Remembering Grover at 75” on Saturday, April 13, at 10 p.m. at DoubleTree by Hilton Reading.

 

JOE McBRIDE
Contemporary jazz keyboardist and vocalist Joe Mc Bride debuts his show with horns — Joe McBride & the Texas Rhythm Club:  Unchain My Horns! — at the 29th Annual Boscov’s Berks Jazz Fest on Sunday, April 7, brunch at the DoubleTree by Hilton Reading/Grand Ballroom.
Joe shares thoughts with Diane Dayton of Cool Jazz Cafe about the dynamics of this show with the Berks Horns.
He also will be performing during Gerald Veasley’s Midnight Jams the first weekend of fest at The Inn at Reading.
Joe reflects about his relationship with the piano and performing at the Berks Jazz Fest for many years.

 

PHIL PERRY
Amazing vocalist Phil Perry returns to the 29th Annual Boscov’s Berks Jazz Fest and shares thoughts with Diane Dayton of Cool Jazz Cafe.
Phil celebrates 50 years in the music business this year.  He will perform at the Chuck Loeb Memorial All-Star Jam on Thursday, April 11, at DoubleTree by Hilton Reading/Grand Ballroom.  At the same location, Phil is part of the Chris “Big Dog” Davis & Friends show on Saturday, April 13, where all of the friends in this show have recorded with Chris.
Phil sheds light on this connection, trust and freedom that is a result of that relationship.

 

JASON MILES
Keyboardist, composer and producer Jason Miles brings the Music of Weather Report to the Boscov’s Berks Jazz Fest.
Jason talks to Diane Dayton of Cool Jazz Cafe about this show that he has brought to Berks in the past, sharing about the wonderful setting for this performance at the Miller Center for the Arts on Friday, April 12.
Jason gives details about the first show at Berks and the carefully thought out difference with this show including specifics about the stellar musicians involved. He reflects on his insights and historical perspective on Weather Report, the genius of improvisation inside great composition.
Jason is also excited about being a part of the Chuck Loeb Memorial All-Star Jam on Thursday April 11, at DoubleTree by Hilton Reading.

Guitarist Nick Colionne shares his thoughts with Diane Dayton about all of his performances at the Boscov’s Berks Jazz Fest, including Gerald Veasley’s Midnight Jams on both weekends.
Nick has three performances at DoubleTree by Hilton Reading — the Soul of Jazz on Saturday, April 6; Thursday April 11 for the Chuck Loeb Memorial All-Star Jam; and the Chris “Big Dog” Davis show on Saturday, April 13.
Nick talks about the great chemistry with the artists on stage. Nick, who has three No. 1 records with Big Dog, says Berks Jazz Fest is a unique festival and he appreciates the loyal fans who attend each year.

Bassist, composer, and producer Brian Bromberg is coming to the Boscov’s Berks Jazz Fest for the entire time with various performances.
Brian’s humorous conversation with Diane Dayton of Cool Jazz Cafe includes his take on playing the drums again in the Monday, April 8, RMF Project Penske Jazz Jam at the Inn at Reading.
Brian will be part of Gerald Veasley’s Midnight Jams at the Inn at Reading both weekends. He also joins the talented cast for the Chuck Loeb Memorial All-Star Jam on Thursday April 11 at DoubleTree by Hilton Reading/Grand Ballroom.
On Sunday, April 14, Brian Bromberg’s Unapologetically Funky Big Bombastic Band, featuring the five-piece The Berks Horns section, headlines at The Inn at Reading. He reflects about the wonderful energy at the Berks Jazz Fest and how rewarding it is to be a part of it.
