DoubleTree by Hilton Reading Small Ballroom / Jazz Cruises Stage
Contemporary jazz pianist Gregg Karukas will bring his romantic, uplifting melodies to the Jazz Cruises Stage at the DoubleTree on Saturday, April 7 as part of Boscov’s Berks Jazz Fest.
The concert, also featuring saxophonist Brad Collins, drummer Deren Blessman and The Berks Horns, follows the release of Karukas’ 13th album, “Serenata,” in spring 2021. This solo-piano album reflects his love for Brazilian music, with piano impressions of Brazilian singer/songwriter Milton Nascimento and his Brazilian music artists’ collective, Clube Da Esquina, and singer/songwriter Dori Caymmi.
Since 1975, Karukas has explored various genres, but Brazilian music is one of his favorites, since he collaborated with Caymmi, Sergio Mendes and Ricardo Silveira in the 1990s.
Prior to that, he played with East Coast jazz fusion bands, toured with Melissa Manchester, and, in 1985, co-founded The Rippingtons after relocating to Los Angeles.
In 2013 he won the Grammy Award for Best New Age Album for his “Echoes of Love,” which he produced, composed, arranged, engineered and played on, in collaboration with Afghan-American composer/pianist Omar Akram.
