No jazz festival would be complete without a dose of Gypsy Jazz, and this year our own Hot Club of Reading will join forces with violinist Jason Anick and guitarist Henry Acker to present an evening of the jazz style made popular by Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli in the original Hot Club of Paris. “A Night of Gypsy Jazz,” on Saturday, April 2 in the Yocum Institute for Arts Education.
The concert is part of the Yocum’s Jazz on the Avenue Series.
Anick, one of the youngest jazz violin and mandolin professors at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, is a master of many styles. He has toured and recorded with virtuoso guitarist John Jorgenson, a Gypsy Jazz ambassador, since 2008; his Hot Club-style Rhythm Future Quartet has released its third album, “RFQ and Friends”; and with his Acoustic Trio, formed in 2017, he plays roots fiddle music. The Jason Anick/Jason Yeager Quartet, which has released its debut album, “United,” plays a mix of genres.
Acker is a 17-year-old prodigy who began playing at 8 and performing professionally at 9, often with his father, jazz guitarist Victor Acker, and uncle, bassist Dana Acker. He has shared the stage with the late Bucky Pizzarelli, guitarist Frank Vignola and other jazz greats and Gypsy Jazz legends.
Acker won the 2017 Djangofest North West Saga Award, and is a four-time winner of the Downbeat Magazine Student Award for Jazz Soloist.
The Hot Club of Reading consists of guitarists Josh and Josiah Taylor, saxist/flutist Chris Heslop, bassist Trey LaRue and accordionist/violinist Ken Gehret.
